No Future?

It saddens me whenever I get to know that someone's parents are forcing them to do a particular subject which they are not interested in. What on earth are these parents thinking? Do doctors, engineers, lawyers and accountants only be accounted as professions with a future? So those stall venders who have a passion for grilling burgers and are earning tons of money, but is said to have no future?

Scenario 1:

Child wants to take design, parents say no future. So now the child studies business. When the child is being ask why not do what she wants? She says because parents are paying for her college. Her solution plan to get what she wants: graduate from her business course and work till she gets enough money to study what she wants.

So whatever the parents has forced the child to do, the child won’t end up doing it, so what’s the point when close minded parents decide for their child a career with ‘future’ and end up wasting their money because of letting them study what they wouldn’t end up doing?

If you who know nothing of the design field and can say that it has no future, are you the best person to be giving advice to them? Isn’t the thinking that the design field has no future shallow?

Scenario 2: Conversation between A and B

A: I want to change course to fashion design but is it a good industry? I heard that people can’t really get a good job here in Malaysia.

B: I think you should do some research about that industry here in Malaysia. If it is promising then go ahead, if otherwise, then you have to think of other options

A: I think fashion is the only thing I’m interested in.

So what is the solution that best suits A?

It is not the field of study that will determine your success, but it is you that is in control of your success. You are the only driver in your own journey of life. I think that no matter what fields of study you go into, you are responsible to create a future for yourself. Future here means success. Success of course means money. For example if a fashion graduate here in Malaysia is unable to get a decent job, then that person have to find ways with whatever knowledge he has to make ends meet. It could be starting own business or venturing into other related industries. Use the passion and drive in what you have and go ahead and create success of your own. Now that sounds rather not too complicated right? So why afraid to study what your heart really longs for all these while?

So isn’t the thinking of “unconventional professions = no future” simply just shallow? For example some people may look up to doctors and too often many will dream that their offspring will become one, but a painter may be looked at as just someone who does strokes with his brush. If both of them are earning the same amount of money every month, so which of them has chosen a career with a “future”?

Hard work, determination, having the right attitude, time management, etc…………

Needless to say those are the key to a future!

Fun weekend

As some of you know that I’ve been rushing for an assignment but a break was much needed. Here’s what I’ve been up to during the weekend.

Cam whoring with my beautiful garden while waiting for a friend to pick me up on fri. I then met up with Sherene and went home with her. It was a nice afternoon just relaxing and watching some movies. Thank you, Sherene and Emily for the wonderful time.

Then at night went for cg, and then to the Chan family house to stay over. Nice catching up with you Rach! And thank you the Chan family for your hospitality. Sorry for ‘kacauing' once in a while.. haha

Just look at the delicious American breakfast that rach’s mum made! An unforgettable breakfast!

And then we headed off to pyramid to a wedding exhibition.

First time seeing a GPS system actually working! Was quite fun playing around with it, and it is really helpful with the info of all locations.

We managed to catch the fashion show.

Prince charming and his princess

Look! That’s Xandria! I was so star struck! I wish I could go talk to her. I’m a big fan of her column. She’s a great writer.

Some pics taken at a floral display.

Look at my 'boh geh' smile. Gosh! I've got to stop that kind of smile, my gums are showing! Ruin the whole pic!

After the fashion show, we were very lucky to get tickets for a movie at the very last minute. So happy to get the tickets at the booking counter, the lady was so nice to let us purchase the ticket. It was such a last minute thing. Thank you God! Hancock was a ok movie I think. Love the humour in it but not the story line.

Went to the Saturday service. Seldom get the chance to attend so it was a good service. Really enjoyed it. Had free dinner at church. Played taboo. Went home, watched another movie, sleep!

It’s a Sunday morning and I finally joined some of the Puchong cg members for their famous dim sum gathering. Was never a fan of dim sum though. I only like eating those fried stuff.

And after dim sum was time for me to go home. What a relaxing holiday for me, I somehow got a little more motivation from it to continue with my dreadful assignments.

One more week to go and I don’t think I’ll be able to finish this assignment! Aargh! Be more efficient! That’s not meant for me only…

Fake Guava anyone?

Yuck!

I remember receiving mails about fruit venders selling fake guava called apple-guava, a “hybrid fruit”

It would be interesting to have a look at it though but as time went by, I never got a chance to see it until one fine day!

My sis went to Penang for work and on her way home, she and her colleagues bought this apple-guava. None of them have heard of it before, so everyone bought it for RM4 to try. So expensive la!

My sis bought 2. Yesterday when I was having dinner, my mum asked me to try the “new” fruit, apple guava.

One look at it, I told my mum “oh, this is the fake fruit la! Last time got an email about this ma…”

My mum said “Are you sure? I too read before in mails.”

“Yes! Look at the skin, its so fake!” I said

My brother come dashing to the dining table and said “No la! They just add apple taste to it la!”

Oh, wow.. That spells D U M B!

no, they don’t put apple taste to it! They cut off the guava skin and soaked them in sugar water with food colouring. That’s how they do it. To not know anything and simply make judgments is so freaking dumb! He thinks he’s so smart ah! There is a wise saying “it is better to keep your mouth shut than to open it and to remove all doubt” Yes, exact words of wisdom for him. In case if he’s reading this and don’t understands, it means that it’s better to not say anything if u don’t know anything, because when you do, people know you are stupid!

Ok.. That’s enough.

As I was still not very sure about it so I tested it after dinner, the greenish skin taste sweet. And the inner flash taste just like guava. Confirm fake la! Curious as I was, I did some experiment with it!

Look closely at the skin, it’s a little translucent. The colour also looks fake.

I only had a small piece of guava, so I tried to soak it in blue food colouring.

This is when I slice the top part away.

As you can see the food colouring sticks easily on the skin. But it did not reach all the way in like the green colour, they could have soaked it longer. Whatever that they do to make this special fake fruit is not good! Food colouring is not good! Fruits are meant to be natural!

While searching about this fake fruit on the net, I found this fake hair pic:

So cute!

Busy?

I'm super busy and stress!

Why busy? because I have time for tv and weekly movies near college and yet I'm rushing assignments! not that busy huh? Well, I consider being not busy when i dont have to rush like mad for my assignment!

I'm blogging from college, while waiting to attend a night class again.

I just watched Hellboy 2 at summit, its to kill time actually. Been fortunate enough to be able to catch 3 shows within this 3 weeks. Last week watched wanted and week b4 watched kung fu panda. Surprisingly, among this 3 movies, the only one that really impressed me was KUNG FU PANDA! Its a must see, its really deep and smart!

Design Woes

Never would I imagine that design would be so tough!

Here’s the scenario:

There’s a product design competition with the theme safety. My classmates and I are entering this competition and this will be also be our one and only assignment for our Industrial subject for this sem.

Who to impress?

Judges?

Subject lecturer?

Public?

Well, we have to impress all! And they all have different opinion of what would be a good design. So what the judges see is brilliant does mean it’ll be useful or even good in design terms to the public and likewise. What one of our lecturers wants is us to create something to catch the eye of the judges and that everyone can relate to. This means that the judges also care more on the outer look and design, and function second, which totally goes against the principal of industrial design – form follow function.

So how do we go about this?

I’m about 70% done with my assignment, and I just got the “people can’t relate to” opinion from one of them. I can’t turn back now. One of my friend, RACH! always told me that you got to filter what people say and judge yourself what is best. I’ve got to do some thinking of my own on to which is the best way to go about this. So I’ve got to take in all the advice given and make it work! I can’t let all these opinion ruin my motivation to complete this. I’ve got to believe in my own product, believe in its concept, believe in the innovativeness it brings and work it out! Yes, Work it out! Hmm.. I feel motivated now! Got to continue my sketches...
